Unfortunately, the DOE’s Waste Isolation Pilot Plan (WIPP) in Carlsbad, New Mexico was no exception – WIPP processing slowdowns caused by new coronavirus restrictions coupled with outbreaks of COVID-19 threatened to cause backups of transuranic (TRU) waste shipments from Los Alamos National Laboratory’s (LANL) Radioassay and Nondestructive Testing (RANT) facility at Technical Area 54 to WIPP. Downstream impacts of these new measures caused trucks to leave LANL only half-full, as compliance with DOE regulations on the packaging and shipment of waste were not reflective of the unique changes caused by the new coronavirus.
